Sodium Laurel Sulphate    and    Ammonium Laurel  Sulphate

The  Difference between Sodium Laurel Sulphate and Ammonium Laurel  Sulphate
Both derived from coconut, but the difference is huge! People who "lump" these together have obviously not worked with them both. Please read on......

Sodium Laurel Sulphate
The fact the Sodium Laurel Sulphate started its life as garage floor degreasant is not surprising. When you have worked with this substance you can understand this. It is highly toxic, but has amazing grease dissolving properties. The fact that is incredibly cheap tells you the rest of the story! When you take the lid off the container, if you are not protected with a face mask, the fumes instantly burn your lungs. To handle this ingredient, I have to wear face mask, eye protection, and gloves up to my elbows.
You dare not let it come in contact with your skin! And, this is the substance which is in just about all store bought shampoos, face washes, hand washes, toothpaste, and the list goes on.
Ammonium Laurel Sulphate
Ok – Now for Ammonium Laurel Sulphate. Odorless, in a gel form, can be applied in its concentrated form directly onto my overly sensitive skin, says it all. It is a very gentle surficant. The difference is, it is not cheap. It is the main ingredient in our shampoo, and makes a beautiful product.
Our dish wash, all purpose cleaner is also made with this ingredient.

Sodium Laurel Sulphate (From Google)

(Nasty Chemical that causes drying of the skin and is in most store bought shampoos, and Hand Washes.)

This is one of the first articles I found on Google about this Chemical. I encourage my customers to check their
labels. Many Pet shampoos do no list ingredients used. So unless they stipulate “No Sodium Laurel Sulphate” They will be sure to contain it!

"Sodium Lauryl Sulphate started its career as an industrial degreasant and garage floor cleaner. When applied to human skin it has the effect of stripping off the oil layer and then irritating and eroding the skin, leaving it rough and pitted."

Studies on SLS have shown that:"(Judi Vance, Beauty To Die For, Promotion Publishing,
1998)
1.
"Shampoos with SLS could retard healing and keep children's eyes
from developing properly. Children under six years old are especially vulnerable
to improper eye development. (Summary of Report of Research to Prevent
Blindness, Inc. conference."

2.
"Sodium Lauryl Sulphate can cause cataracts in adults and delays
the healing of wounds in the surface of the cornea."

3.
"Sodium Lauryl Sulphate has a low molecular weight and so is easily
absorbed by the body. It builds up in the heart, liver and brain and can cause
major problems in these areas."

4.
"Sodium Lauryl Sulphate causes skin to flake and to separate and
causes roughness on the skin."

5.
"Sodium Lauryl Sulphate causes dysfunction of the biological
systems of the skin."

6.
"Sodium Lauryl Sulphate is such a caustic cleanser that it actually
corrodes the hair follicle and impairs the ability to grow
hair."

7.
"Sodium Lauryl Sulphate is routinely used in clinical studies
deliberately to irritate the skin so that the effects of other substances can be
tested."
(Study cited by the Wall St Journal, 1st November 1998)
